Investing in our planet through beach clean ups
In celebration of Earth Month, the Zero Waste Foundation, with the support of Don’t Waste, collaborated with numerous organisations for a series of countrywide beach clean ups. The theme for this year’s Earth Day was to invest in our planet, which strongly resonates with the core values of the Zero Waste Foundation to preserve the environment and minimise waste.
On Earth Day 2023, held on Saturday April 22, the Zero Waste Foundation collaborated with Pick ‘n Pay People ‘n Planet to support two exhilarating clean-ups, taking place at Umhlanga Beach in KZN and Milnerton Lagoon in Cape Town. These events successfully mobilised community members and inspired the youth to become environmental champions.
Umhlanga Beach Clean up
The cleanup held at Umhlanga Beach in KZN is testament to what can be achieved through effective partnership and collaboration. Over 300 dedicated volunteers united on that day to successfully remove over 200kgs of waste from our beautiful beaches. The Don’t Waste teams are committed to prioritising the recovery of recyclable materials at beach clean ups and worked hard to sort all the waste on the day. As a result, 23 bags of valuable recyclables were recovered including:
- 13 bags of glass
- 8 bags of plastic
- 1 bag of cardboard
- 1 bag of cans
Below are some highlights from the Durban clean up.
Milnerton Lagoon Beach Clean up
In a remarkable display of dedication, a simultaneous clean up took place on the west coast of the country at Milnerton Lagoon. Our partners, including Pick ‘n Pay People ‘n Planet, Polyco, and Save A Fishie, effectively removed a staggering 182kgs of waste from the pristine shores of Milnerton Lagoon through their combined efforts. Over 50 volunteers joined forces, working tirelessly to make a positive impact on our environment. This collaborative effort for earth day raised awareness about the alarming issue of plastic pollution and aimed to safeguard our natural environment.
Partner with the Zero Waste Foundation
Earth Month provided a wonderful opportunity to invest in our planet, but our commitment doesn’t stop there. The Zero Waste Foundation is always looking to partner with local environmental organisations to help remove waste from our natural environment and enhance our impact. Together, with like-minded partners, we firmly believe that we can elevate our shared mission to protect the environment every day.
